There is no evidence that Salme was flight training for the job that he had at the time. Salme is well known to have volunteered as a flight instructor at various air shows, most recently the International Airshow Asia at Singapore's Changi International Airport. From December 2009 to September 2010, he co-founded The Fake Pilots of the World Facebook page. The page's user base reached 390,000 before Facebook seized it from the site in early November 2010; Salme was later arrested.

Harry Salme's Facebook page has now been deleted as well and the House of Representatives' "Fake Resumes" Project lists Salme having worked at Corendon Airlines from July 1997 to July 2010 as a First officer, Captain, and Chief Captain. In recent years a series of Pilots in the aviation industry were convicted of faking their resumes.

Salme received his first commercial pilot license in Denmark in November 1989, and he later obtained his commercial flight instructor certification in the USA in January 1989. From December 1993 to December 1997, he worked for Scandinavian Airlines and then served as a Captain with Lufthansa Airways, based at Amsterdam-Schiphol Airport.
