5. Called to complete holiness
18. It is a foundation of the Church that the people of God live “apart in Christ,” as St. Paul says (cf. Col 3:1), with a total self-giving and a total self-giving to others. This is because holiness, which is the origin of the apostolic community, is not the possession of the few but is given to all, since it is the gift of God. In the light of this, the call to holiness cannot be separated from the call to evangelization. For holiness to be lived out in the fullness of love, it is necessary that it be lived out within the Church in the service of the Gospel. Holiness, as a gift of God, also demands a response of love towards the neighbour, and towards the Holy People of God. The call to holiness, from the beginning, was accompanied by the call to conversion. In the light of the Gospel, holiness cannot be separated from the conversion of others, that is, from the pastoral service of the Church in its social dimension.
26. Holiness, as the culmination of the Christian life, demands “a participation in the life of the Holy Spirit”. As a gift of God, holiness demands all those things that the Spirit gives, beginning with “the forgiveness of sins”, and it demands all those things that the Spirit manifests in the life of the Christian. Holiness is a gift of God, who gives to each member of the People of God the fullness of the truth and love that he is for all persons, as St. Paul says (cf. 2 Co 7:1-4). As such, holiness demands respect for the truth and respect for the other, for the particular and for the general, for all people and for the least. Holiness, as a gift of God, demands this of the Christian, and, as such, it demands that each Christian will be personally attentive and personally responsible for others. “A man who is holy,” St. Paul says, “does not need to rule over anybody, for he is worth more than an army of rulers” (cf. 2 Co 7:12). 827ec27edc
