Either through manual searches and investigation of abstracts of patents, or by using relevant Navy Office of the Chief of Naval Operations Libraries and Archives (NOLA) online databases, I determined that the handwritten fonts were typically standard typewriter fonts, such as Courier, Times Roman, and Arial. But the typewritten document text was very readable, which makes this type of font particularly useful for further searching. It is also possible to locate the original index card, in which the typewritten name was written in the same font. I made a list of names that I could determine were handwritten with this same font. In December of 1990, I contacted S&E and made arrangements to reproduce the handwritten document text. The original index cards were scanned and converted to digital images, and then the document text was entered into the system for transcription. There were other indexes (such as district, race, and years) that appeared on the index cards that were also converted to digital images and stored for future reference.
In 1939, the Army closed its schools, and in 1940, there were no Army primary or secondary schools in the United States. Throughout the school year, students who did not support the war effort (those who were conscientious objectors) were permitted to take standardized tests to determine if they had the right to be exempted from military service. Thousands of war brides took these tests and were allowed to stay in the United States.
War Correspondents Guild membership began in 1940, and by 1941, membership was granted to about half of the 300 correspondents on active duty. GI Bill of Rights was established in 1944-45, and, between the years of 1980-81, more than 48,000 veterans took advantage of the program. In June of 1943, the Army, Navy and Marine Corps fleets of more than 300 ships were involved in Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of French North Africa. As part of World War II, a total of 721 ship attack submarines and 365 support vessels operated in the war effort. The U.S. Navy alone of all the services had 985 attack submarines and 626 support vessels. d2c66b5586
