Revolver 2005: A Mind-Bending Thriller by Guy Ritchie
Revolver 2005 is a action thriller film co-written and directed by Guy Ritchie, and starring Jason Statham, Ray Liotta, Vincent Pastore and André Benjamin. The film centres on a revenge-seeking confidence trickster whose weapon is a universal formula that guarantees victory to its user, when applied to any game or confidence trick.
The film was released in UK theatres on 22 September 2005 and received mixed reviews from critics. Some praised the film's stylish visuals, complex plot and philosophical themes, while others criticized its confusing narrative, excessive violence and lack of character development.
The film follows Jake Green (Jason Statham), a cockney gangster and gambler who is released from prison after a seven year stretch in solitary confinement for an unspecified crime. He believes that Dorothy Macha (Ray Liotta), a gang boss involved in illegal gambling all over the city, owes him a debt for setting him up. Jake and his brother Billy (Andrew Howard) visit Macha's casino, where Jake wins a fortune on a chip toss with Macha. Humiliated, Macha orders his right-hand man Paul (Terence Maynard) to have Jake killed.
As Jake and his brothers leave the casino, a man (Vincent Pastore) hands Jake a card and tells him that he can help him. Jake soon finds out that he has a rare blood disease that will kill him within three days. He is contacted by two mysterious loan sharks, Avi (André Benjamin) and Zach (Vincent Pastore), who offer him a deal: they will protect him from Macha's assassins and cure his disease, in exchange for all his money and obedience to their rules. Jake agrees, but soon realizes that Avi and Zach are not what they seem. They are actually part of a larger scheme that involves manipulating Jake's mind and testing his ego.
Jake discovers that Avi and Zach are using a formula devised by a chess prodigy named Sorter (Mark Strong), who works as a hitman for Macha. The formula is based on the concept of ego depletion, which states that one's self-control and rationality are limited resources that can be exhausted by stress and temptation. By putting Jake through various ordeals and challenges, Avi and Zach aim to break down his ego and reveal his true self.
Jake also learns that Avi and Zach have a personal vendetta against Macha, who killed their mentor Sam Gold (Tom Wu), a powerful crime lord who was secretly behind all the illegal gambling in the city. Sam Gold was also the one who taught Avi, Zach and Sorter the formula and its applications. Jake realizes that he is part of a bigger game that involves Macha, Sam Gold and himself.
The film culminates in a showdown between Jake and Macha at Sam Gold's penthouse, where Jake confronts his own inner demons and faces the truth about himself and his enemies. The film ends with a twist that reveals the true identity of Sam Gold and the nature of the formula.
Revolver 2005 is a film that challenges the viewer's perception of reality and identity. It explores themes such as ego, free will, fate, duality, enlightenment and redemption. The film is influenced by various philosophical and religious traditions, such as Buddhism, Kabbalah, Gnosticism and Alchemy.
