Again, if you really want to get stuck in, you can dive deeper into the game with Arcade, Disciplines and Skills. Your ODM gains experience points, and wielding a better ODM will raise skills, improving your chances of landing critical hits. If you find yourself overwhelmed, you can increase your Attack Power, Speed, Strength and Defense. And last and not least, you can core yourself for Stamina and unlock more moves with Skill Points.
Extra help comes in the form of Skill Cards, which you can grab from completing missions, using ODM Attacks and taking down monsters. Each one has three tiers, with levelling up allowing for yet more combo possibilities and damage boosts. As you level up your skills, you'll be able to customize your ODM's Skill Cards to your preference, and you can equip four of them at once. Weapons are the same regardless of which skill you're using - a few more options available in the city and on smaller titans - but each appears with the traditional yellow cross symbol to indicate some kind of critical hit is on the way. The list of cards available for you to equip is limited to three, but you can equip them as many times as the slot allows.
Like its lore, Attack on Titan: Humanity in Chains's navigation is nothing short of minimalist. The 3DS screen is split into two sections: the top is used for the action, while the bottom is split into four sections, two for mission information and two for stat information. You'll control your ODM with the Circle Pad, and your movement is also restricted to moving in the four cardinal directions (up, down, left, and right). Using the Triangle Button, you can scan the map, place you and your ODM in the middle and get a rough sense of where your objectives are.
This is a simplified approach compared to some of the heavy procedurally-generated maps you'll come across in the main game, but it's not annoying at all. In fact, the lack of attention to detail shows at times, but it doesn't get in the way of the core experience. Destroying titans might be complex, but it's also fun. d2c66b5586
