Polystokes and O'Donohue's (1999) segmentation of people into 15 distinct ethnic groups based on cultures, lifestyles, languages, and religions. We use six segments (Chinese, Indian, Korean, English, African American, Hispanic) and measure the influence of wealth, race, and sex on that segmentation. We find that within race, ethnicity, and gender, wealth and sex combine additively to produce measureable differences in segmentation. Racial distrust and discrimination are associated with higher percentages of both African American and Hispanic classes, particularly for men. Wealth and income, within race and gender, show similar effects.
We find that African American men and women are treated less fairly, with lower levels of trust and higher rates of distrust. Wealth and income combine additively to produce significant differences between the Asian and Hispanic denominations. We also find that race interacts with sex
and educational background to produce interesting results. This interaction is most apparent for Hispanic women. We find the Asian denomination is likely to be the most trustworthy, with the lowest levels of distrust. Chinese men are the least trustworthy.
We conclude by discussing limitations of the current research and the relationship between racial/ethnic segmentation and trust. We discuss the implications of our results and how future research can clarify the nature of the relationships we have uncovered. We suggest five avenues for future research: (i) comparing our own results with other data sets, (ii) evaluating our assumptions regarding levels of trust, (iii) exploring the extent to which our results can be generalized to other sectors of the economy, (iv) investigating the relationship between distrust and finances, and (v) discussing how trust and distrust relate to other social-psychological constructs such as altruism. We suggest that the combination of
